Students and teachers at Tonkawa Elementary recently participated in a One Book One School event. The event took place over a six week period over the book, Wishtree, by Katherine Applegate. Each classroom was provided a copy of the book through a grant from the Tonkawa Education Foundation. Wishtree is a heartwarming story about an oak tree and a crow who help their neighbors embrace their differences. Each day throughout the event, teachers read aloud a chapter(s) of the book – everyone was reading the same thing each day. A Wishtree was added to the wall in the foyer at TES and various things were added to the tree as they occurred in the story. At the end of the story, the students added their own wishes to the Wishtree. The students greatly enjoyed checking the tree each day to see what had been added, and enjoyed reading the wishes. This event was wonderful in that all students at TES participated and got to listen to a great book with beautiful life lessons.
