Took a break from football Sunday afternoon to help out at our local museum. I figured it was about my turn since we have so many volunteers in our community that pitch in to make Tonkawa the special community it is.Being a former History teacher and a bit of a sentimentalist it was like handing a kid the keys to a candy store. I enjoyed journeying through Tonkawa History (again) and took special interest in some of the smaller items that tend to get overlooked for the grander items. I got a kick out of the 1927 Sears and Roebuck catalog and was surprised at the Christmas lights and decorations that were offered then. There were also some of the early electric train sets listed. Pretty cool.I would have to say my favorite item was the old coke machine in the very back room. It brought back memories of riding in back of a pickup truck with my grandpa Huff from Tipton, OK, checking the cattle, cotton crops, and stopping by Uncle Marvin Huff’s filling station for a bottle of pop from a machine just like that one.
