Gateway First Bank in Tonkawa hosted the community in a celebration of Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 10. A beautiful display of 14 elaborate, hand-stitched quilts made by three Tonkawa residents hung on the walls. Patty Levings McCune and Sherry Jeffries Fields made over 100 quilts, including those displayed by Gateway First Bank, for the local veterans and those who were killed in action.
Flags representing each branch of service were displayed in the lobby thanks to their owner and Veteran, Mike Schatz, who also provided a rare copy of a book on Tonkawa veterans. The book is one of only five published. Photographs from the book were used to create a video that played throughout the day, honoring each local veteran. In addition to area residents, 33 veterans attended, giving the bank leadership from Tonkawa and Tulsa the opportunity to thank them in person for their service.
