At the Delphi Study Club’s January meeting, Ann Cales outlined Melinda Gates’ role in improving the lives of the poorest of the poor in Third World countries.Reviewing Gates’ book The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, Cales told members hosted by Beverly Frazier that Melinda cofounded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with her husband, Bill, in 2000 to fight poverty, disease and inequity around the globe. Gates has traveled to many countries, gathering data and visiting personally with native women to learn what is needed to better their lives.Gates found that millions of mothers in poverty-stricken countries die in childbirth and babies also die. Women have no rights and are completely dominated by males. Gates is working for a global revision of general culture to accept the rights of women and grant equality to every person.According to Gates, family planning and education are the steps to empowering women to take control of their destinies, thus saving many lives and lifting families out of extreme poverty. The culture bias against women by men must be eliminated. Through the work of the Gates Foundation, progress is being made in these areas.Delphi Study Club will next meet February 8, 2022.
