50 years ago, January 20, 1972Jack Mildren To Speak At Football BanquetJack Mildren, outstanding Wishbone-T quarterback at the University of Oklahoma and named the outstanding offensive player in the 1972 Sugar Bowl game on New Year’s Day will be the speaker at the Tonkawa Quarterback Club Annual Banquet, it was announced today by Robert Hobson, president. The dinner will be held Wednesday, February 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the new school cafeteria at Tonkawa High school.Mildren, considered the blue chip back in Texas when he was a senior at Abilene High school in 1968 has just completed his senior football year at OU and engineered the record-breaking Sooners to many NACC rushing records this past fall. In a duel of quarterbacks in the Sugar Bowl which matched Mildren against Pat Sullivan, Auburn’s Heisman Award winner, Mildren was selected following the game as the outstanding offensive player on the field.Mildren’s running ability and keen sense in running the option play has been given much credit for the Sooner’s success this year. A player who had an outstanding high school record as a passer, Mildren allayed all doubts this year as he teamed with his high school buddy, Jon Harrison many times during the season for touchdowns and long gainers. Mildren’s passing until this fall had not materialized as a Sooner quarterback.Early in the fall when Sooner assistant coach Bob Warmack spoke at the Quarterback Club’s watermelon feed, he predicted that Mildren would have his finest year. Warmack’s prediction reflected the thinking of the OU coaches and Mildren led the Sooners to a glorious season.Warren Marler To Graduate From OkmulgeeWarren L. Marler, 1605 E.
