Retiring Teacher, Olive Devereaux
Creative Abilities of Her Individual
Sitting on the speaker’s platform this evening at commencement exercises for Tonkawa seniors will be a woman who this week ends a 26-year teaching career.
Miss Olive Devereaux, fourth grade teacher at Washington elementary school this year, began her career in a country school in Nebraska and since that time has taught in high schools, colleges, elementary and G. I. schools.
Interspersed with teaching have been brief periods of time in other professions.
Miss Devereaux has earned a reputation in Tonkawa as a “creative” teacher, as it is not surprising that her philosophy of teaching reflects that ideal.
“I believe that a teacher’s function is to bring out what is in the individual. I like to give the child the opportunity to be creative in his own way, not send them all down a chute where they lose their idealism” and an emphasis on music and art where her students find self--expression.
“I try to teach my students the values in idealism and to be alert to the lessons to be learned in all experiences. They should be thankful for hard experiences as well as the nice experiences,” she says.
BPW Holds Installation Of Officers
Mr. Elmer Thomas assumed office as president of the Tonkawa Business and Professional Women Wednesday evening in ceremonies held at the Hotel Tonkawa.
Mrs. Laura Williams, membership chairman, conducted the installation for Mrs. Thomas and for Mrs. George Mix, vice-president; Mrs. Clem Ogg, secretary; and Miss Etta Frances Barclay, treasurer. She was assisted by Mrs. John Schatz and Mrs. Teresa Green.
Installation ceremonies featured a miniature flower garden before a background of white trellis and red roses, the BPW flower. Various flowers were added to complete the garden as each officer was directed in her duties.
A solo “This Is My Task” by Miss Betty Barclay, accompanied by Mrs. Clarence Burr, was also a feature of the ceremony.
Special guest at the dinner meeting was Miss Joan Campbell, recipient of the BPW scholarship award in 1958, who this year graduated from NOJC. She was presented with the graduation gift from the club.
During the business session, presided over by Mrs. Howard Cole, retiring president, a report was heard from Mrs. Kathryn White, chairman of the auditing committee. Treasurer-elect Mrs. Ed Cunningham resigned, and Miss Barclay was elected to serve in that office.
