Tonkawa Foundry Installs Two New Electric Induction Type Furnaces
A Tonkawa industry took another step forward this month with the addition of new equipment.
Installed at Tonkawa Foundry and placed in operation last week were two Magnothermic Multiductor furnaces. One of the electric induction-type furnaces will be used for melting iron and iron alloys and the other for melting brass.
According to F. S. Zarzecki, engineer for the Ajax Manufacturing company of Trenton, N. J., maker of the furnaces, the new equipment operates in a unique way in melting the metal. Heat is acutally not applied to the furnace in any manner, but is generated in the iron or brass that is to be melted.
Zarzecki explained that three-phase, 60-cycle electricity is transformed to single phase, 180-cycle for use in the furnace. The current passes around the melting pot in coil of copper tubing which creates an intense magnetic field, in the manner of an electromagnet.
The metal inside the furnace acts as a resistor to the magnetic waves thus it begins to heat in the same manner as an overloaded electrical wire or a fuse. So rapid is the process that 700 pounds of iron will be brought to 2,800 degrees in a period of 48 minutes.
