Bray Gets Nod in Student Election
In a 90 percent turnout, students of Tonkawa High school Wednesday elected Kenny Bray as student council president for the 1960-61 school term, Principal Joe Hubbell announced.
Elected vice-president for the coming year was Bobby Parrott. Judy Asbury was elected secretary of the council.
Wednesday’s election followed a week of spirited campaigning for the offices, climaxed Tuesday with an assembly at which each of the candidates spoke.
The unsuccessful candidates for the offices were Ruth King, presidential nominee; Claudette Hubbell, nominee for vice-president; and Dennis Clark, nominee for secretary.
Class representatives to the council will be chosen at the beginning of the 1960-61 school term next fall.
Campaign managers were Bill Fix for Bray, Mary Dunn and Marilyn Bewley for Miss King with Judy Asbury campaigning for Miss Hubbell, Bill Fix also managed Parrott’s campaign and assisted Joe Brining and Miss Hubbell in campaigning for Miss Asbury. Managers for Clark were James Gilbert and Robert Easterling.
NOJC Journalists Attend Convention Of College Press
Ten Northern Junior college students will attend the Oklahoma Collegiate Press association convention at Central State college April 22 and 23 with approximately 200 persons expected to be in attendance.
J. Leland Gourley, assistant to Gov. J. Howard Edmondson, is feature speaker for the convention. He will address the group at the awards banquet Friday evening.
Convention theme is “Full Speed Ahead.” Careers in journalism will be topics of discussion Friday afternoon. Saturday morning is devoted to tours of an Oklahoma City TV station and the Oklahoma Publishing CO.
Eight well-known journalists from various fields will conduct forums Friday afternoon. Leonard Tipton, OCPA president, is in charge of the two-day meeting.
Four speakers will participate in the first forum Friday at 1:30 p.m. Representing yearbook companies will be Mrs. Agatha Campbell, yearbook division head from Semco Color Press, Oklahoma City.
Carter Bradley, United Press Bureau chief, Oklahoma City, is to speak on wire service jobs. Public relations careers will be discussed by Charles Bresnehen, Humpty Dumpty public relations man.
Photography work will be presented by Al McLaughlin, head photographer at the Oklahoma and Times.
At 2:45 p.m. broadcast journalism by Dick Johns opens the forum. John is news director at WKY-TV. Large newspapers will be covered by Wayne Mackey, assistant city editor, Oklahoma City Times. Frank Dobyns, Edmond Publishing company owner, will take care of small papers. Journalism education is under the direction of Glenn Butler, CSC director of publication.
