City Shows 12% Increase in Sales Tax Collections
Tonkawa again set the pace in business increase in the county, according to the latest sales tax collection figures released by the Oklahoma Tax commission.
The figures made of collections in December for November sales indicate a 12 percent increase for Tonkawa over the same month of 1958. With the county showing an increase of 6.88 percent, Ponca City collections increased just over 6 percent. Blackwell collections increased more than 7 percent and Newkirk collections dropped more than 4 percent.
Of the north control area of the state, Kay was one of the few showing increases in sales tax collections. Grant county decreased 3.34 percent, Noble county dropped 4.51 percent, and Osage county dropped 8.12 percent. Garfield county collections gained 6.24 percent and Pawnee county showed a big gain of 21.05 percent.
Gen. Autry Commends Battery A
General Otwa T. Audry, divisional artillery commander of the 45th National Guard division, commended Tonkawa’s Battery A. Second Howitzer Battalion, Sunday when he was a special guest of the unit at its all-day muster.
The general made a presentation of $100 in gifts to the Tonkawa battery for its winning a recruiting contest with other batteries in the battalion. During the contest period, a total of 19 recruits were taken into the unit.
“It is action such as these that will strengthen the National Guard in Oklahoma.” General Autry said.

Bill McKennon, Enid, and Capt. J. W. Casper, Tonkawa. Tonkawa unit officers at the luncheon were Capt. Marshall L. Bathurst, commanding officer and Lt. Lonnie Bray, Jr. battery executive officer. Other guests were Glen Strange and Bill Roller.
CWF Meet Is Marked By Election
Mrs. Jess Mitchell was elected president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship at the general meeting of the group held Wednesday in Fellowship hall.
