Local Boxers Will Vie in Tournament
Jay Burris, 18 year-old Tonkawa boxer, will be going for his third trip to the National Golden Gloves tournament in Chicago this weekend when the first hurdle in the compaign corners at the
Northern Oklahoma-Southern Kansas meet to be held in Ponca
City. He will compete at 116 pounds.
Burris was the winner of the Wichita tournament in1967 and
1968 fighting in the 112-pound weight class. Last year he fought his way to the quarter finals at Chicago where he lost by a split decision.
In 1969 he won the AAU state tournament of Oklahoma by knock-outs. In 1958 he was runner-up in an All-Army tournament at Ft. Riley, Kans. where he was beaten in the finals by Sergeant
Toraz. Fifth Army champion.
Also expected to see action in the Ponca tournament Friday and
Saturday nights is Jerry Cooper, fighting in the 112-pound division.
He was a winner of the Wichita and Northern Oklahoma tourney in
1958 and fought at the National Golden Gloves meet. In 1959 he was the winner of the Wichita City tournament.
Other area amateurs slated for tournament action are: Neal Trantham, 112 pounds; Larry Weant, 147 pounds: Bob Askren, 160 pounds; Lester Elbert; 160 pounds; Johnny Ladisma, 210 pounds; and Jesse Lira 112 pounds.
The tournament to be held in the Ponca City Armory, will begin each of the two nights at 8:15 a.m. It is sponsored by the Moose
Lodge and the Ponca City Police department.
City Republicans Pick W. S. Marsh As Chairman
W. S. Marsh was last week elected city chairman of the Republican political party in an organizational meeting held here. Elected vice-chairman of the city was Mrs. Brian Conaghan.
Re-elected to offices were Mrs. E. S. Rutherford, secretary, and
B. A. Cockrell, treasurer.
Named precinct committeemen for Tonkawa’s five precincts were:

Mrs. Docia Fry and Carl Fry were named Tonkawa township committeemen; Bill Denney is the alternate.
