50 years ago, March 21, 197411 Farmers Get Awards At Conservation Meeting Eleven area farmers were honored for their conservation practices and received awards here Thursday night at the 22nd annual cooperators meeting of the Western Kay Soil and Conservation district held at the Tonkawa High school auditorium.Gene S. Guyer, who farms east of Blackwell with a small grains and cattle operation was presented the Goodyear Conservation Award as the outstanding district cooperator for 1973. The presentation was made by Mel Green. Goodyear wholesale manager for Oklahoma and Texas. He said of Guyer, “during the past 25 years he has applied such conservation practices as 58,000 feet of terraces, grassed waterways, farm ponds and pasture planting. He owns 640 acres and farms a total of 1,120 acres. He has served as a county committeeman for the ASCS and Farmer’s Home Administration on the board of the Blackwell Rural Water District, past Master of Weston Grange. He received the FFA American Farmer Award and is an honorary member of the Blackwell FFA chapter and serves on the board of Prairie Chapel church.Vogt Tells Lions Of 1974 Buccaneer Baseball SquadTonkawa Buccaneer baseball coach Kenneth Vogt was the guest speaker at the noon luncheon meeting of the Lions club Thursday at Perkins Restaurant and said he has the smallest squad out since he has been here. He told the Lions that he has 15 out for the team which includes four seniors, three juniors, seven sophomores and a freshman. He said he has only three starters back from last year’s team, that won the district and second in the Cherokee Strip conference.He said the Bucs will play in the Cherokee Strip Conference again this year which includes Deer Creek-Lamont, Wakita, Billings and Braman. He said alignment of the district has been changed to include Tonkawa, Chisholm and Chilocco.He said his seniors are Terry Ingmire, Marvin Klufa, Gary Walcher and Kurt Kirtley. On the probable starting lineup, Vogt listed the following, pitchers, Ingmire, who he said was a very versatile athlete who can play any position, Gary Walcher, Marvin Klufa and Mark Nichols; first base, Kirtley, second base, Klufa or Walcher; third base. Klufa or J. D.
