50 years ago, January 17, 1974Buc Girls Win Trophy At Enid BB Tournament The Tonkawa High school girl’s basketball team won fourth place and a handsome trophy in the Wheat Capital Basketball tournament last week at Enid. The girls lost their first game on Thursday to Pioneer, 55-41, and then won Saturday over Perry, 56-30. It was their first victory of the year and the girls nearly doubled the score over their opponent.In the Perry game all three of the Buc forwards scored in double figures. Debbie Wilson, 24, was the leading scorer in the game; Julie Mason, 13, and Roxanne Schatz, 14. Leading scorer for Perry was Pam Workman with 19.The score was 22-8 at halftime. The Buc girls took charge and never trailed. Wilson hit 10 fielders and four free throws, Mason, eight and 2 and Schatz, seven fielders. Three guards saw action, Marta Moorman, Judy Hullet and Pam Burns. Tonkawa hit 6-11 free throws and Perry 6-9.Against Pioneer, M. Semrad was the leading scorer in the game with 26. For Tonkawa Mason led with 18 points on eight fielders and two free throws. Wilson scored seven fielders and a charity toss and Schatz, four field goals. Guards who played in the game were Burns, Hullet, Moorman and Dana Lyall. The girls trailed 1110 at the end of the first period and 25-18 at halftime.The girls next game is Friday night at Pond Creek.Four Buc Players Named All Tourney At Enid Four Tonkawa High school basketball players were named to the All Tournament teams Saturday at the Wheat Capital Tournament at Enid.Mike Yelton, high scoring Buc forward was named to the first team in the boys competition and Judy Hullet, guard, Julie Mason and Debbie Wilson, forwards, were all named to the second alltourney team. All received trophies for their selection.Three File For School Board Office No. 4Three candidates filed for office number 4 for the Tonkawa board of education last week with the Kay County Election Board at Newkirk.Filing were Richard Detten, RR 1, Ponca City; Jerry A. Legg, RR 1, Tonkawa and Daniel E. Reeser, 215 North Eleventh.Detten is the incumbent in office Election will be held Tuesday, January 22 at the Police Station.
