The Oklahoma Department of Highways announces that traffic on I-35 will be slowed to allow workmen to repair two bridges 4.5 miles south of the Perry and US 64 exit.Starting Monday, July 23, traffic in the northbound lane will be diverted to the opposing lane of travel where two lane traffic will exist. A 60 mph speed limit will slow traffic on the one mile stretch and motorists making the crossover must slow to 20 mph.According to Oklahoma Department of Highways Resident Engineer C. V. Smith, concrete deterioration is the cause for the bridge repair. Both bridges will be widened and re-decked by the Oklahoma Paving Company at a cost of $271,113.62. Work on the eastern bridge is expected to take about six weeks. After its completion, work will start on the western bridge and the traffic situation will be reversed.Terrapin Derby, Donkey Ballgame Is Thursday The Terrapin Derby and Donkey Softball game, sponsored by Tonkawa Jaycees will be held Thursday night at Lions Park with the terrapin races to begin at 6:00 p.m. and the softball game scheduled for 7:00. Len Coffey, chairman announced today.He said that very few entries had been made in the terrapin event this year. This morning only 26 had been registered at the Chamber of Commerce office. A year ago 337 had been signed up the day prior to the Derby.The derby was called off by the sponsoring Chamber of Commerce earlier and about a week later the Jaycees announced they would sponsor the event. Coffey said in the meantime many boys and girls had released their terrapins.In order to race a terrapin in the derby, it must be registered in advance at the Chamber office and assigned a number which is to be painted on the animal’s shell. Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. Thursday. There is a limit of three terrapins per person that can be raced, Coffey said today.Prize money is $60 for the event. There will be preliminary races and then winners in the preliminary events will race in the final race for additional prizes. There will be no admission charged for the Derby. Coffey is the chairman for the Derby and Bill Jenkins is co-chairman.Immediately following the Derby, the Jaycees will play the Fire Department in the Donkey Softball game which is scheduled to start at 7:00.
