Tonkawa firemen responded to two residential fire calls, two vehicle fire calls, three grass fires and four rescue calls during the month of June according to Fire Chief Eddie Manley. In addition they rendered first aid on three occasions, went to Blackwell on a mutual aid cell and answered one false alarm.Major causes of fires were gasoline on a hot engine, fireworks and grease on a hot stove. Fire loss for the month was $250 in building and $40 to contents, and $4,500 to vehicles.Manley said “We feel that we had a very light loss for our rural community. No wheat loss due to fire was recorded here and I think the farmers deserve a job well done because the high straw and very dry conditions presented a very high hazard condition. We know that there is going to be quite a bit of stubble that will be burned off and ask that if possible farmers please call us and let us know when this is going to be burned. We have had one fire call run and had to check out several others. If we know that the situation is under control we will not have to respond to a false alarm.”Firemen traveled 749 miles during the month, 43 under emergency conditions and spent 57 man-hours at fires.Tonkawa Guards Having Different Camp At DugwayMembers of the 1st.
