Rhonda Noonan and Quana Means, Tonkawa’s delegates to Girls State, returned home Saturday evening from East Central State College where the annual event was held. The girls were sponsored by the Tonkawa chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary.Quana was elected State Committee member and Commissioner No. 3 of Akin City on the Sooner Party.Rhonda served on the City Election Board and was Chaplain of Demke City; Boomer Party, when officers were elected.The girls were returned to Tonkawa by Quana’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Means, and Carla.Mickey Phillips Is New Fireman With City Dept.A former Blackwell fireman, Mickey Phillips, 32, started work Friday as a regular fireman on the Tonkawa Fire Department, acting Fire Chief Eddie Manley said today.Phillips and his wife Debbie and 2 ½ year old son Terry have established a home at 1004 East North Avenue. He received his education at Blackwell and has been with the fire department there for 12 years.Manley said he is happy to get a man of the qualifications of Phillips for the job. Phillips is a certified Oklahoma State University State Fire Instructor, is on the educational advisory board for the Oklahoma State Fire Fighter’s Association and is a Registered Emergency Medical Technician.Buffalow To Take Part In National BASS TournamentCity businessman, Joe Buffalow, owner of Joe’s Refrigeration Service is one of six Oklahoma bass fishermen who will represent the state in the Bass Anglers Sportsman society (BASS) chapter championships June 13-15 at Pickwick Lake, Tennessee. He will be joined by an Oklahoma Cityan, two Lawtonians and two Tulsans in the national meet.The six have survived local BASS chapter competition and then a state fishoff to make the national meet.A total of 126 contestants from 21 states will participate at Pickwick, a lake just north of the Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee.Winners of the national competition will divide some $10,000 in cash money plus dozens of prizes donated by the manufacturing firms.Most of the bass caught in the competition will be released alive back into the lake in good condition.The meet is restricted to the 126 contestants and costs nothing to enter. Contestants must pay their own expenses.
