50 years ago, may 10, 1973A Tonkawa High school junior, Jim Appleman, son of Dr. Ron Appleman, 1610 East North was one of six students named Saturday as a recipient of a Sir Alexander Fleming Award. A total of 102 students applied to study for the awards and Appleman was picked Saturday from a group of 24.He will be assigned to study with a research scientist at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City during the months of June and July. The award is for $500 and given to outstanding high school junior science students for the summer study program.Another Tonkawan, Miss Debra Barns, OU student, was the recipient of the award several years ago.John McMurtrie, Fourth Grader, Winner John McMurtrie, Jr., fourth grade student of Mrs. Ramona Herren at Lincoln school, has been named an award of merit winner in the fourth annual youth contest sponsored by the Oklahoma Poetry Society. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John McMurtrie, 209 South Ninth Street.Word of his honor was received by Mrs. Herren from Marj Bennett of Oklahoma City, chairman of the contest.His winning poem follows: People Everywhere by John McMurtrie, Jr. People here, people there, People everywhere.
