Waltons Start Work On Enlarging Pond
A fishing hole almost within casting distance of Tonkawa. That’s what the local Isaak Walton League has in view, and work is now in full swing on a program to enlarge and restock the Tonkawa golf pond.
The golf pond, located about 150 yards northwest of the armory, was drained early last week and work on enlargement and dredging was started by the county Thursday.
Long range program in mind by the Walton League is to have an ideal fishing spot on the outskirts of town for Tonkawa youth, according to Dr. M. L. Bergsten, president of the organization.
Under the guidance of Joe Marshall, John McGuckin, Oscar
Merrell and Floyd Ridgeway, the pond was drained over the weekend Feb. 27-28 by pumping the water from the pond into a drainage ditch past the spillway on the south side. The process took some 48 hours.
10 Seek Positions On Council;
Three Up for Re-Election
Tonkawa voters will have a choice between two candidates for each of the five city council posts to be filled in the city election of April 6.
Ten candidates filed for the city posts during the final two days of the filing period Friday and Saturday, according to I. D. Rose,
Newkirk, secretary of the county election board. Five candidates filed Friday and five more tossed their hats in the ring Saturday, final day of filing period.
Filing for Ward 3 council positions were C. B. McClean, incumbent and Howard Legg. In Ward 2, incumbent Riley Ozment fates Harvey Williamson. Ward 3 condidates are Bud Soull and
Charles Jueschke and in Ward 4 incumbent R. L. Crowder meets
V. L. Mulkey. Filing for councilman at-large were Glenn Strange and Leroy Kirkpatrick.
Two incumbent councilmen failed to file for re-election, Ward 3,
Councilman C. E. Frost and Councilman-at-large C. W. Pardew.
McClean, WIlliamson, Jueschke, Crowder and Strange filed for council posts Friday and Legg, Ozment, Scott, Mulkey and Kirkpatrick filed Saturday, Ross said.
Past Matrons Club Has March Luncheon
Mrs. Anna Knode, Mrs. Mary Olmstead and Mrs. Foster Olson were hostesses at the March luncheon meeting of the Past Matrons club of the Order of the Eastern Star held recently in the Masonic Temple.
The serving table, laid in white, was centered with an arrangement of green shamrocks, while carnations and golden spirals surrounding three white graduated tapers.
Mrs. Hazel Jones gave the invocation.
