The New Testament uses the image of running to encourage us to stick with our commitment to Christ. Paul wrote to Timothy to encourage and strengthen him in his ministry. In his words we find the energy to keep on running the race set before us with energy and persistence (1 Timothy 6:11-16).First, this passage tells us to flee from some of the things he had mentioned in the previous verses, that is, we are “run” away from sin. The idea of “flee” tells us that this is an emergency. There is danger in sin so we need to escape from the things that can keep us from the pursuit of godliness. This requires not only a conscious decision right now, but also a sustained, lifelong effort as we follow Christ.Second, he points out that there are six characteristics that we are to pursue, and to seek to make a part of our life. We are to “run” after these things! These are: righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. These things we are characteristics of our lives that we see in Christ. They are found by never ceasing to be aware that all life is lived in the presence of God and that we seek to emulate Christ in our lives. To “pursue” these things is characterized by at the kind of fervor with which some people pursue riches or fame. It is important to remember that they don’t come about by accident. They occur in our life because we have chased after them energetically, and have chosen again and again to live that way rather than following our own desires. Paul describes this pursuit as a “fight.” We are to “fight the good fight.” And we are to “take hold” of it. This means we must seek after these things.Third, Paul says that God gives us life for our pursuit. God gives us the energy to flee from sin and to pursue the Christian life. Paul was emphasizing that Timothy, and we, are not to put forth a halfhearted effort as we live the life of following Christ. He says to “Take hold of eternal life” — embrace the promises of God with faith, obedience, and zeal. He says to “Remember your good confession” that Jesus is Lord! Our confession is that Jesus has the right to rule my life—I crown him King of my life.Paul followed Christ’s example ...
