Bread From Heaven
In the Bible, St. John’s Gospel, chapter 6, Jesus said, “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE, Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Almost everyone likes bread. It is called “The Staff of Life.” Throughout recorded history and even beyond, we have evidence that humans have had bread as some form or part of their diet. Did your mother bake bread? Mine did. I can almost smell it in the oven. Don’t you love a fresh, warm slice “slathered” with butter? You could almost call it “heavenly”! Did any of you take your lunch to school? Mine was in a paper sack, cause I didn’t have a “Hopalong Cassidy” or “Roy Rogers” lunch box. Many men took their lunch or dinners in a bucket, often including home-baked bread. As early as in the third chapter of Genesis, God told Adam, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread.” No longer from the wonderful trees of the Garden of Eden, but plants from the field, watered with your sweat. But at least we can have “homegrown” food, corn on the cob, fresh bread or fruit pies in the oven. Yes, I think we had bread and food from heaven! I wish everyone could have been as blessed as we were. And we still have “showers of blessings.” We still have “Bread from Heaven,” because God, in His great love for us, sent us “The Bread of Life.” In John’s Gospel, when Jesus saw a great multitude coming to Him, to hear Him teach and heal, Jesus said to one of His disciples, “How are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat? But He knew what He could and would do. He took five little barley loaves and two fish and fed 5,000 people gathered there. He said, “I am the Bread of Life.” And if you come to Him, He will feed you and give you Eternal Life. And you will never be hungry again.
