The sweet aroma and jolly sounds of the holiday season are fading in the background as we focus on New Year’s resolutions that include healthier lifestyles.
Following holiday festivities, many are finding themselves ready to lose weight and slim down.
Dietitians estimate the average weight gained from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day is five to seven pounds.
We’re no different.
Except, it’s usually more over the past year.
The first step to a healthier lifestyle in 2020 is to review your overall fitness and nutrition habits. Select an exercise program you can incorporate into your daily routine and begin a high carbohydrate, low-fat diet.
Complex carbohydrates, found in grain products (our area farmers will like this one!), are the body’s best source of energy because they are burned in a constant, time-released manner.
With grain foods, you can eat twice as many carbohydrates for the same number of calories because fat contains nine calories per gram while carbohydrates found in grain foods contain just four.
The USDA recommends eating six to 11 daily servings of grain foods such as pasta, cereal, bread, crackers and rice. One serving is a slice of bread, 1/2 a bagel, four crackers, 1/2 cup cooked pasta, 1-oz. ready-to-eat cereal or a 1-oz. tortilla.
