As the season creeps closer to Winter, we are reminded that days of icy roads and walkways are just around the corner. Unfortunately, millions of older people are treated in emergency rooms every year due to falls; many of which cause serious injury or secondary complications. The Ombudsman program, along with LTCA of Enid Area Agency on Aging, wants to make you aware of some fall risks and prevention tips for your safety. Some Causes:• Clutter or loose rugs• Wet floors or icy sidewalks• Poorly lit areas• Loose footwear• Body weakness, blurred vision or hearing issues • Medical conditions, medication effects or balance problems Some Prevention Strategies:• Organize and remove any trip hazards.• Wear non-skid shoes that fully support your feet.• Add grab bars in bathrooms and near stairs.• Limit any alcohol consumption.• Add lights to poorly lit rooms.• Place items in reach. Do not climb on counter.• Throw salt or sand on icy walkways and avoid walking on them.• Have your hearing and eyes tested.• Speak to your doctor about any medical conditions, medications and possible side effects, and any other risk factors. Ask about specific things you can do.Please take every precaution necessary so you can avoid falling. If you know someone living in a long-term care facility that may need an advocate or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer advocate, contact an area Ombudsman: Megan Kirby or Steve Torres @ 580-237-2236, or you can also send an e-mail to mkirby@ltcaenid.org, storres@ltcaenid.org.
