(Nancy Appleman brought this from one of Gloria Lang-don’s old “Letter from Home” columns and thought it worth re-printing. Francis and Gloria Langdon edited and published
The Tonkawa News for over 50 years.)
Audrey Schmitz stopped me on the street the other day and said, “You should write something about all the people who are exercising in the mornings!
And so I will.
Mary Moorman and I walk early each morning (around 6 a.m.) and we often see Audrey, who bicycles 8 miles each a.m.! We usually pass on NOC Drive, which is a popular place for joggers, walkers and cyclists because it is so well-paved, and there’s not much traffic.
Audrey, as well as Mary and I, often see fellow exercise enthusiasts - Bea Kreger, Nancy Jackson and Pam Smith - who bicycle several miles; Reta Swords, Wesley Brown and Christy McMillen - who jog; Nina Brining and Caroline Carter, who walk early each day; Helen Crain and Doris Strange - who take an early morning walk in the southeast part of town. Occasionally we meet Jim and Lily Disbrow - but usually their walks are in the evening.
Mary and I often cool off after the walk with a swim at NOC Pool, as we are members of the NOC Fitness Club. And there are several early morning swimmers there - among them Sharon Case, Lisa Welch, several from Blackwell and Deer Creek. Heather Wet-more is always there bright and early, too, as she works there for the college.
Seems that most of the fitness enthusiasts I’ve mentioned are women! But there are some Tonkawa men who are among the exercisers. I see Chuck James and wife, Marilyn, bicycling regularly, and Jim Carver often swims early in the mornings. Dr. D. L. Mathews was the News early this week, and commented that he is swimming two or three times a week at the NOC Pool.
