Northern undertakes massive book sale and book drive

An enormous book sale filling the Foster-Piper Fieldhouse and book drive are in the works at NOC Tonkawa. NOC needs your assistance through donations, attending the sale and volunteering.

Winners in the Miss Tiny Tot and Mr. Muscle contest sponsored annually by The Tonkawa News since 1993 were announced this week by The Chamber of Commerce.

New website for All-Star athletes

The Danny Bluebaugh Allstar Athletes and Military Memorial Showcases Committee of the Alumni Association is announcing the new website: htttp//www.tonkawaallstars-military.com . The committee hopes community members try it and pass it on. It is accessible on desk top, laptop or iPad and phone.

Police training at Northern

Law Enforcement Officers converged on the campus of Northern Oklahoma College, Wednesday. Sounds of gunshots and explosions may have been heard. There presence was not in response to an emergency, rather to attend a vital training course. The gunshots and explosions were simulations. The Northern Oklahoma College (NOC) and the Kay County Sheriff’s Office hosted a 3-Day Training Event instructed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT). The training instructed officers how to respond to an active attack event safely, tactically, and effectively in an “exterior environment.” Officers from around the county and even the United States attended the training. This particular course is a “physically demanding” course and the triple-digit temperatures made it all the more difficult, however, the students pushed through and completed the certification. Tonkawa Police Chief Nick Payne stated, “we are so fortunate to have NOC care for it’s community and allow us to use their facilities to bring in this much needed and sought-after training to our law enforcement professionals. There is immense planning and preparation undertaking this type of course but it allows our first responders to stay trained with innovative tactics to keep our community safe.”

Gospel Jubilee closed this Saturday for holiday

The Ponca City Gospel Jubilee will be closed July 2nd for the 4th of July weekend. The Jubilee will be back open July 9th at 6:30.

Social Security Matters

Dear Rusty: My wife will be turning 62 and eligible to collect Social Security this year. We realize it will be a reduced amount. I am 52 and have been the sole income earner for most of the last 20 years. We also have an adopted son who will be turning 14 this year. We realize he will receive a dependent benefit until he turns 18 and this may make the case for filing early. I am confused about widow benefits - will my wife’s early filing affect her widow’s benefit amount? Signed: Confused Husband

Celebrate 40th anniversary

Jerry and Jean Ailey of Ponca City, OK celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in Puerto Vallarta – Marival Armony, Mexico. The couple was married June 11th, 1982 at Lake Murray Resort in Ardmore, OK. Mrs. Ailey is the former Jean Butterfield. The couple had their first child in December of 1983, then their second child in August of 1987. The couple raised their family in Blackwell, OK until 2006 when Jerry’s job moved them to Dodge City, KS. They lived in Dodge from 2006-2019 when Jerry’s job again moved them to Ponca City, OK where they currently reside. The couple have two children, Brandon (Kayla) Ailey of Ponca City and Casey Durbin of Tonkawa. Five grandchildren, Breck and Dace Ailey, Addyson, Tynlee, and Johanna Durbin. Mr. Ailey is employed with Becker Oil Corporation as the Production Supervisor. Mrs. Ailey is employed with PCPS as a Title VI Coordinator.

Sermonette

Sometimes we make things more difficult and complicated that they need to be. When we try to explain about Jesus Christ, we get off track when we make things to difficult. We say Jesus is the” eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being,” and before you know it we have lost those who wanted to hear the simple message of the Christ.
