The Tonkawa Electric Department and Public Works have been putting in long hours this month, said City Manager Nick Payne. “I am very proud of each and every one of our Public Works employees. They have worked hard to make this city look outstanding for the holidays,” Payne added.The Tonkawa Electric Department, along with the rest of the Public Works crews, have installed all of the new Christmas decorations and lighting displays downtown for public viewing. Additionally, The Electric Department conducted presentations at Tonkawa Elementary School to talk with students about the importance of electricity safety.These presentations are funded and provided by a joint effort with the City of Tonkawa and the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) – “Our Local Power.” Students were shown the tools and equipment that Tonkawa Electric Department personnel use daily to stay safe and keep our power on.Students were treated to a demonstration of how electricity works in our power grid, with a functional Electricity Model Board. “This fun model teaches kids how our power system works, using real electricity” Tonkawa Public Works Director Noel Clonts stated. Clonts added, “Electricity is fun and helps our city every day but it can be dangerous and that is what this presentation is all about.”The Tonkawa Electric Department answered questions from the students and handed out free flashlights and coloring activity books to each student.
