50 years ago, November 11, 1974Team ranking for wrestlers begins in three weeks at NOC as coach Bob Zweiacher moves the Mavericks toward their season opener, Dec. 3, with East Central University.“We have been working on moves and conditioning for the past few weeks, but the season opener isn’t far away and we will begin covering more drills and actual wrestling in the opening weeks,” said Zweiacher.Although Junior colleges often graduate a large number of their athletes yearly, Northern’s wrestling team returns eight regulars, among them three national winners.Roger Williams, Cordell sophomore, led the team in scoring last year with 114 ½ points and falls with 6.Williams captured first place in both the Oklahoma City Invitational Tournament and NOC’s Tournament last year with a second place finish in the Sterling, Colorado Tourney.Sixth place national winner Mel Perez, Edmond sophomore, carries a 13-8-1 record into the season with 33 points last year and second place in the Sterling Colorado Tourney and regionals.Bucs End Season With 20-7 Loss To Pawnee Leading 7-6 at halftime, the Tonkawa Buccaneers dropped behind shortly after the second half started when a high snap from center went over the head of punter Frank Klufa, and was recovered by halfback Kris Kline who scored from the five-yard line to put the Pawnee Bears out in front to stay and they went on to win 20-7 in a District A-9 game at Pawnee. It was the final game of the season for both teams.Pawnee scored in 12 plays, after the opening kickoff in a 70-yard drive when Mike Green, leading Bear ball carrier struck pay dirt from the 13 on a reverse with 7:22 left to play in the first period. The conversion pass attempt was no good.Longest gain of the night by the Bucs was a 27 yarder by fullback Gordon Sanders from the Buc 23 to the 50-yard line. Quarterback Shon Simpson put the ball in the air on several occasions but had only one reception, good for seven yards to Ailey.Linebacker Jay Laramy, guard Rusty Storm, ends Curtis Muegge and Terry Ailey and defensive backs Simpson, Kevin Steichen, Sanders and Unruh all played well on defense.The Bucs wound up their season with a 2-7 record.
