50 years ago, October 21, 1974The art of Gene Dougherty of Tonkawa will be the featured exhibit in the West Gallery of the Oklahoma Historical Society, beginning October 20. It will replace the exhibit of the Indian Artists of Oklahoma.The Dougherty exhibit will principally feature watercolors, with an emphasis upon landscape and Western scenes.It will remain in the gallery through most of November.Dougherty is chairman of the art department at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, and has displayed his works as an artist throughout the Southwest. He has been a frequent award winner of art exhibits, particularly in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.McIntyre Tells Lions About New Eye Project Lion Hubert McIntyre was the speaker at the noon luncheon meeting of the Lions Club today at Perkins restaurant and told club members that they have reason to be proud they are Lions. He said the organization was chartered nationally in 1917 and now has over a million members in 125 different countries of the world. “We have 52 members and we annually raise over $1,000 for various worthwhile activities, eye glasses, scholarships, the IOA Ranch and others. When you consider that there are a million Lions in the world and if each club averages raising $20 a member for worthwhile projects, that’s $20 million. Enough money to run 16 Northern Oklahoma colleges, to put it on a local basis,” he said.He said the club here has purchased over 100 pairs of glasses in past years and this year has purchased three pairs for persons unable to buy their own. McIntyre said the idea for the Lions Eye Bank for corneal transplants started at the Perry Lions Club and since the program started the Eye Bank has furnished 2,296 transplants.THS Band To Participate In Marching ContestThe Tonkawa high school band, under the direction of Doug Martin, will participate in the District Marching Contest at Ponca City’s Blaine Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 26.The band will leave Tonkawa at 1 p.m. Contest inspection will be at 2:24 p.m. and marching at 2:54 p.m.A total of 17 bands will take part.
