50 years ago, September 12, 1974Big Maroons Meets Bucs Here On Friday Night A much tougher opponent than last week’s can be expected by the Tonkawa High school Buccaneers Friday night when they entertain the Perry High school Maroons on Maverick field. The class 2-A Maroons have the size this year and although they trailed Newkirk last Friday night, going into the final period, they scored two touchdowns in the final quarter to win, 20-13. Both TDs in the last quarter were scored by the Maroons’ big 190 pound fullback, Edward Moses, on 20 and 43 yard runs.Moses carried the ball 19 tines against Newkirk and gained 148 yards for an average of 7.53 per carry. Behind him in rushing was Terry Williams, a halfback who carried 11 times for 96 yards and an 8.73 per carry average. Williams scored the first Perry touchdown in the second quarter on a 14 yard run.Coach Jim Minor said today that three of last week’s starters have been out the first two days of this week and are “doubtful starters”. He said tackle Tom Allen has a sprained neck, Jay Laramy, guard and linebacker and guard Rusty Storm have been sick. Minor said Kevin Steichen, the Bucs’ starting quarterback who did not see action last week due to complications from a spider bite, will not suit up again this week. His position was filled Friday night by Duane Green and sophomore Shon Simpson.Leading ground gainer for the Bucs last Friday night was senior halfback John Unruh.
