50 years ago, July 11, 1974Winning FloatWinning float in parade Thursday was made and entered by Tonkawa Camp Fire Girls. The float was constructed on a trailer and had a large paper Liberty Bell on the front with the words Liberty 1776 on the sides. Camp Fire Girls rode on the float waving flags. They won $25 cash for their top prize.Volunteer Firemen Honored Two volunteer firemen, Wayne Haen and Wes Barney were both honored at a retirement picnic Tuesday night at Ray See Park, attended by firemen, volunteers and their families. Haen completed 20 year service July 1 and Barney completed his 20 years on January 1.Fire Chief Eddie Manley, who presented the pair with plaques from the Oklahoma State Fire Fighters Association and each received a wrist watch from the fire department. Each watch was engraved with the initials of the recipient and his date of service to the fire department.Tonkawans Attend Retired Teachers Meetin In PoncaSeveral Tonkawans were in Ponca City Monday to attend the Retired Teachers Association of the North district meeting and luncheon held at the Holiday Inn.The newly elected officers presided. Speaker for the meeting was the sports announcer for WBBZ, who talked on “The Moral Double Standard.”Members attending from Tonkawa were Erma Ailshie, Rebekah Aldridge, Lucille Bush, Gretel Davis, Mildred Humphries, Melvin Korn, Barbara Mann, Hazel Vincent, Alice Michael and one guest, Mrs. Velle Vincent, Jet, Okla.Story Time At Library Final session of children’s story time was held Tuesday at the City Library. Conducted as a project of the Twentieth Century Club the sessions have been held for the past six weeks for children four and older each Tuesday afternoon. Twelve different club members have taken part in reading the stories each week. Those attending were Chad Jackson, Stacy Womack, Kevin Looper, Carol Detten, Tracy Blubauch, Brenda Detten, Mrs. Roger Blubaugh, Karen Grace, Keith Grace, Jeff Burton, Vicki Harris, Tracy Kegans and Sonya Looper and Mrs. Curtis Jackson. Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Blubaugh read the stories to the group Tuesday.
