Oklahoma and head baseball coach Skip Johnson have reached a deal to extend his contract through 2029.In a statement from the official X account of OU baseball, Joe Castiglione announced that his new contract terms are awaiting approval from the Board of Regents. Johnson, who has led the Sooners for the last seven seasons, was one of several names associated with the Texas A&M vacancy.D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers first reported on Friday that Johnson had interviewed for the job, but that the Sooners’ coach was meeting with school administrators to discuss his contract, which was set to expire this year.Castiglione confirmed that meeting took place in his statement on Saturday.“Yesterday I met with Coach Skip Johnson for his annual performance review and planning for the upcoming year,” he said. “We reflected on our baseball team’s tremendously successful 2024 season … The job Coach Johnson and his staff have done is simply remarkable.”The Sooners won the program’s first Big 12 regular season title this past season and have now appeared in four NCAA tournaments under Johnson. No other terms for the deal were announced, expect that it will run through 2029.“He is deserving of that and we look forward to more big things certainly on the horizon under Skip’s leadership,” Castiglione said in the statement.Johnson has been regarded as one of the top pitching coaches in the country. Beyond his talent as a coach, Johnson’s new deal gives the Sooners much-needed stability heading into the Southeastern Conference next season.The Sooners are 229-153 under Johnson and have two 40-win seasons in the last three years.
