50 years ago, December 9, 1973Mrs. Weber Is Elected NCTE Committee MemberMrs. Fern Weber, principal and second grade teacher at Washington Elementary school was elected representative –at-large to the executive committee of the National Council of Teachers of English at the annual convention of teachers of English and Language Arts meeting in Philadelphia, November 20 through 25. She will represent elementary teachers of the English Language arts for a two-year term.Elected by the board of directors of the National Council she is one of three members who, with the national officers, will comprise the national executive committee.The Tonkawa teacher and principal will attend all meeting of the national executive committee, the first of which is a weekend conference in Chicago in February. She will also serve as a liaison to four national committees: bias and censorship, creative dramatics and sici-dramatic play, literary experiences of pre-school children, and role and image of women in the Council and the profession. She will report the activities of these committees and submit their problems and questions to the executive committee when it is in session.Merle Young Suffers Serious Injury In Accident Merle Young, area farmer, is hospitalized in room 624, Baptist Memorial Hospital, Oklahoma City, after undergoing surgery there late Friday night for a severe leg injury.Young fell 6 to 7 feet Friday about 5:30 p.m. when climbing up a diesel tank in the cow lot at his farm, his son, Merle, Jr., was home at the time and saw the accident.Young was taken to the Blackwell hospital, and then rushed to Oklahoma City where surgery was performed. His leg was broken in eight places, and almost completely severed above the ankle.Mrs. Young is at the hospital with her husband. He will be hospitalized at least two weeks, possibly longer.December Meet Held Monday By Past Matrons Mrs. Bill Dowler and Mrs. Charles Gulick were hostesses when the Past Matrons club met December 3 at the NOC cafeteria for the regular meeting and Christmas party.The invocation was led by Mrs. Elton Staggers and Mrs. Ted Walker gave the devotionals.
