Carolyn Harold Hawkins Fix
Carolyn Harold Hawkins Fix of Norman, Oklahoma was born on June 18, 1943 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Harold Logan Hawkins and Mary Viola Dobbs Hawkins. She died at home with her family on November 27, 2023 after battling cancer. Carolyn grew up on a wheat farm in Tonkawa, Oklahoma and had many fond memories of her childhood when she learned to shoot a BB gun, use a slingshot, raise chickens and many litters of kittens who she liked to dress up and cart around in a baby buggy. Named after her father, Harold, she was the youngest of three girls. She loved her older sisters, Janice and Nancy, and was especially delighted when they began having children for her to dote on. She was very proud of her middle name and loved and admired her parents greatly.
Carolyn attended public school in Tonkawa, graduating in 1961. She was active in many things in high school, but some of her best memories were singing in Mixed Chorus, Modern Choir, Girls’ Glee Club and Girls’ Quartet, all of which frequently earned Superior ratings at contests. She spoke fondly of her accomplishments with these ensembles and was so grateful for her teacher, Miss June Skeels, for the excellent musical training she received. Carolyn attended the University of Oklahoma, living in the first air conditioned dorms, following high school and studied nursing there.
Carolyn met Bill Fix when
they were in the fourth grade in Mrs. Davis’ class. They began dating in high school and were married on May 10, 1963. They were married for 60 years. They lived in California, New York, and Connecticut while Bill served in the Navy before returning to Tonkawa in 1967. They moved to Norman in 1969 when Bill began his studies at the University of Oklahoma.
Carolyn was a homemaker for the majority of her life but also worked briefly as a nurse’s aide and as a secretary in a doctor’s office. She often said that raising her two children, Daphne and Joe, was a highlight of her life. When Joe married Michelle Boaz, Carolyn loved her as her own and the two of them developed a special relationship. Later, her grandchildren, Lauren, Kathryn, and Daniel became the icing on the family cake and she loved gifting them with books, toys, clothes and all things Lego. Carolyn’s extended family was a blessing to her and she loved each one of her cousins, nieces and nephews and their spouses, their children, and their children. She often said she had the best family and she was right. Family gatherings always included laughter, fun, joy, and at least one good pair of shoes.
Carolyn was a voracious reader from a young age and was always reading at least one book. She loved gardening and was always working in her yard making beautiful gardens year after year. She was a hard worker and took making her home beautiful a priority. Carolyn had many beloved cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, and other various creatures. She loved and treasured them all.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janice, and an infant sister. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Bill, of the home, her daughter Daphne Fix of Norman, Oklahoma, her son Joe Fix and his wife Michelle of College Station, Texas, her grandchildren Lauren, Kathryn, and Daniel Fix, her sister, Nancy Simmons, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The Fix family is grateful for the home health and hospice care she received through Lifespring, especially the extra special care of Neely Stroupe and Peggy Hart.
