Tonkawa’s First Football Queen ... Eleanor Jones Hays Tonkawa celebrates the 75th year of The Buccaneer in 2014. The first Buccaneer football queen was crowned in the 1926-27 school year. She was a sophomore - Eleanor Jones (now Hays) who lived in Tonkawa until her death always supported Public School and Northern Oklahoma College activities.In 1921, a new high school building was built downtown on Seventh Street where the Dollar Store is now located and classes began. Before 1921 classes were held at UPS - now Northern Oklahoma College.According to Mrs. Hays, the first class to graduate from THS was 1925.But it was her class, the Class of 1929, which established the first annual and came up with “The Buccaneer” as the school mascot. Pen and ink drawings throughout the annual carry out the theme of the first “Buccaneeer” annual, reproduced in part on this page. It was also her class who wrote the school song that is still used today. And her class incorporated the Buccaneer ship to carry out the voyage of the Buccaneer to success.
