Jimmie Sturgeon Gets Doctor Degree At Tulsa Jimmie D. Sturgeon, formerly registrar at Northern Oklahoma college, has been awarded the doctorate of education by the University of Tulsa.The degree was conferred at commencement exercises on June 3.Dr. Sturgeon is dean of instruction at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, a two-year community college with an enrollment of 4,000.He is the brother of Mrs. Carolyn Salisbury of Tonkawa. Dr. Sturgeon graduated from Stillwater High school. After serving in World War II, he completed requirements for the bachelor of arts and master of science degrees at Oklahoma State university.He was Northern Oklahoma’s registrar from 1965 to 1969. Prior to his current position in Texas, Dr. Sturgeon was dean of instruction at Seward Community College in Liberal, Kan.Dr. Sturgeon’s dissertation was entitled “A Comparison of the Perception of Students, Community College Faculty, and High School Faculty About a Community College Environment.”Floribunda Unit Has Meet With Mrs. Shelhamer The Floribunda Unit met June 15, 1973 at 9:30 a.m. in the home of Mrs. Robert Shelhamer, 201 S. Public for a coffee. Miss Mary McKinlay was co-hostess.Mrs. Lucille Bush presided at the silver and crystal appointed table. The centerpiece was a cardinal perched on a black branch with a red base. The cardinal was repeated in the napkins.The business meeting was opened with the repeating of the Gardener’s Creed. The State dues will be raised 50 cents beginning in 1974.A Council meeting was announced but no definite date was given for July.Mrs. Paul Brooks reported on the Civic Improvement Committee. The planting at the east entrance of the city on Highway 60 has been trimmed. Vinca will be planted at Blinn Park next Tuesday.Corsages were presented to Mrs. George McCoy, incoming president; to Miss Mary McKinlay for her being program chairman for the last six years; and to Mrs. Meece for being the oldest charter member present.Mrs. Brooks presented Mrs. Bush, retiring president and Miss Mary McKinlay, retiring vice-president, each a gift in appreciation for their leadership for the last six years.Mrs. Austin Barker gave a talk on the trees that were seen at the Bartlett Arboretum in May. She then introduced Mrs. Carl Nardheim who showed slides of trees and other beautiful scenes she has seen during her travels over the United States.Guests were: Mrs. Joe Yowell and Mrs. Nardheim.
