50 years ago, May 17, 1973Teacher Resigns; Two More Hired By Board Longtime Tonkawa High school speech and English teacher Mrs. Ruth Hamburg submitted her resignation and two new teachers for school system were hired at a special breakfast meeting of the board of education Friday morning at Tonkawa Grill. Mrs. Hamburg will retire and has taught 30 years, 19 at Tonkawa.New teachers hired were Douglas R. Martin, 26 who will be band instructor and Robert E. Smith, Jr., 25, who will teach the sixth grade at Lincoln school.Martin is a graduate of Ponca City High and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree in Dec. 1969 from Oklahoma City university. He is completing his work for his master’s degree at OCU in July. He taught for 2 ½ years at Heavener High school before he went back to school to work on his master’s degree.He is a native of Ponca City and also attended Southwestern college, Winfield, Kan. His major in college was instrumental music education. He has studied bassoon with Betty Johnson of Oklahoma City Symphony and composition with Dr. Ray Luke, OCU composer-in-residence. He was principal bassoonist with the Fort Smith Symphony for two years. Martin is single.Smith attended high school at El Paso, Texas and graduated from West Texas State university, Canyon in December 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He was in the Army in Europe for two years after graduating from high school and then studied for a year and a half at Amarillo Junior College before transferring to West Texas State. He moved to Tonkawa in January 1973 with his wife, Pam. The couple live at 111 North Sixth. He is now serving as a substitute teacher here during the past year. His wife is employed as a beauty operator at Helen’s Hairstyles.In other business the board granted approval for the use of the Armory for roller skating on Monday nights for the summer recreation program and the use of the High school auditorium for junior theatre Tuesday nights during the summer.Present at the meeting were members Mrs. Willa Mae Fuhr, president, Dick Detten, Rual Case and Dave Rence, T. J. Allen, superintendent and Lincoln grade school principal Jim Taylor.Awards Made Thursday At All Sports Dinner Basketball, baseball and track awards were made Thursday night at the All-Sports banquet at Perkins restaurant to Tonkawa High school athletes.
