50 years ago, April 12, 1973The American Legion announced today Charles Conaghan and Jim Appleman have been selected as delegates to attend Boys State May 20 through June 2 at Northeastern State College at Tahlequah. Louis Vineyard and Gary Walcher were named as alternates.Charles is the son of Mrs. Brian F. Conaghan, 904 East Grand, and the late Mr. Conaghan. He is a junior student at Tonkawa high school, and played in the school band from the seventh grade until this year. He was Athletic manager in 1968 and 1973 for football, baseball and basketball; received the Oklahoma History award in 1971, the Shop I award in 1971; a member of the science club in 1972; in the 1973 THS stage play; stage band, 1970, 71, 72; received a certificate of award from the Youth Leadership Program of Toastmasters International in 1972; was a Page for the 33rd session of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, 1972; is a member of the National Honor Society; belongs to the First Christian Church were he has been Junior Deacon since 1970, is a member of the Handbell Choir and the Celebration Singers. He also works part-time at Contractor’s Bit Service.Jim is the son of Dr. Ron E. Appleman, 1610 East North and the late Mrs. Appleman. He is an Eagle Scout, an Explorer Scout, a member of the National Honor Society, Tonkawa high school band, mixed chorus, Junior ensemble, and has participated in basketball and track. He is a member of the United Methodist Church where he serves on the Council of Ministries.Mrs. Conaghan Will Run For Representative Mrs. Dorothy Conaghan, 904 East Grand, widow of the late representative Brian F. Conaghan told the News today that she will be a candidate in the special election to fill her husband’s vacant seat in the State House of Representatives. She is a republican.It appears that there will be several candidates in the race. Ray Davis, Blackwell real estate man and builder and a former representative has also indicated that he will run for the post. Davis was elected to a state representative post in November, 1962 and served the 1963-1964 terms.Marion Bringham, twice a candidate for the office and who ran against Conaghan said Saturday that he definitely will be in the race on the democratic side.
