50 years ago, March 29, 1973Tom Salisbury Wins Award In DebateTom Salisbury, pre-law student at Missouri State university, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Salisbury, 2111 East North Avenue, is a member of the school’s highly successful debate team which climaxed its season by winning high honors last week at the Missouri State College and University Debate and Forensics Tournament in Cape Girardeau.The team composed of four debaters won at least 75 percent of its debates during the 1972-73 season as they debated the pros and cons of the national debate question concerning a comprehensive medical care program for all U.S. citizens sponsored by the federal government. The team is coached by Lincoln Morse and includes in addition to Salisbury, Larry Sater, Liberty, Mo.; Bob McCuen, Kansas City, Mo., and Carol Miller, Maryville, Mo.Salisbury and Miss Miller as a team won two first places at the Missouri State Tournament; the superior debate team award at William Jewell College Liberty; and sixth at the Hutchinson, Kansas Community Junior College. In addition, Salsibury and McCuen won fifth place at Morningside college.Salisbury was described by the university as follows, “In Salisbury, NWMSU got a top debater when he transferred in January from Northern Oklahoma college, Tonkawa, Okla. He entered five tournaments for NWMSU and came home with as many trophies. Debate coach Lincoln Morse describes him as a down-to-earth philosopher whose practical approach and strong research is appealing to judges.”Janet Walker, Mark Detten Have Grand Champions at Newkirk ShowThe rains came but not enough to deter the buyers and spectators at the Kay County Junior Livestock Show at Newkirk Friday night when a new sales record total for all animals sold was established.The premium sale Friday night was held in the newly constructed Farm Youth Center building, only recently completed.Top steer was shown by a Tonkawa 4-H member. Janet Walker, whose 995 pound Crossbred was judged the champion of the show.The animal was purchased for $1.55 a pound by the Billings Community Elevator, Billy Hayton, manager. The Service Bank of Tonkawa added a 20c a pound premium on the sale of the animal for another $199.00 for Miss Walker.Janet’s brother, Gary, winner of top honors with the grand champion last year, showed the champion Hereford of the show.
