50 years ago, February 15, 1973An ambitious project to build a 124 x 124 foot building at Newkirk for the Kay County Junior Livestock Show is now underway with both money and labor needed to get the job done in time for the March 20-23 show and sale. Danny Wedel, Tonkawa FFA advisor said today.Friday afternoon Wedel took 11 members of the FFA to Newkirk to work on the project. They were Rusty Storm, Ricky Storm, Eddy Storm, Alan Webb, Kevin Hillhouse, Mark Nichols, Steve Gessel, Gary Fruits, Merle Young, Bobby Coyle and John Whitt. Also assisting at the project Friday was Dick Detten, an area farmer and member of the Tonkawa board of education.Cost of the building is estimated at $15,000. All FFA and 4-H chapters in the county have been donating both time and money to the project but more is needed, Wedel said.Frank Midgely, Newkirk banker, is in charge of the financial drive. Many area farmers have donated labor to the project. The show, annually held in March, has outgrown its present facilities in the Newkirk Community building and a round top barn directly behind it. The new building will be more than adequate for the annual event. Much of the steel used in construction of the building is used.“Anyone wanting to contribute to the building fund can by either seeing me or Midgely.” Wedel said today.VFW Auxiliary Has Regular Meeting Thurs. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign War Billy Harold Post No. 1229 met in the regular session at the VFW hall, Thursday evening.Lenore Walker, president presided.
