For ten Tonkawa seniors, Friday night was the final time they will don a Buccaneer helmet, pads and football gear.You see, the Buc 2022 football season came to an end on a cold, dreary night at Colcord. The Hornets prevailed in a 35-14 win over the proud Buccaneers. Head Buc Coach Mike Kirtley expressed his disappointment as well. “I was disappointed for the kids that we didn’t have one of our better games.” He was quick to give kudos to Colcord as well. “Colcord was an exceptional team and a bad matchup for us,” Kirtley said. “We catch ourselves looking back to Hominy and wish we could have been able to beat them and take a different route.”“It was really an exciting season and our kids played a lot of really good games. They just need to be proud of coming out of that district number two while wishing we would have been one.“They’re a fun team to coach, good attitude, played well together and worked hard. I wish we were still practicing.”After digging a hole for themselves early in the ball game, the Bucs kept clawing back, but just weren’t able to close the gap.Colcord took the opening kickoff and drove 73 yards in 5 plays for a 7-0 lead. The Bucs and Hornets traded punts, then Tonkawa went on a drive of its own, going from its own 20 to the Colcord 9 before fumbling the ball away.Colcord went up 14-0 on a 78 yard, 7 play drive following the Buc turnover. Two minutes later, Tonkawa had scored and was back in the game with a drive of its own, covering 60 yards in just 4 plays with a 9 yards touchdown scamper by Blake Bristow at the 10 minute mark before halftime. The big play in the drive was a 54 yard pass from quarterback Ryan Morgan to Cayden Duvall.Morgan would finish the night 16 of 31 passing for 250 yards Cam Jackson toed the PAT conversion kick perfectly. But the Hornets came right back to claim their 14 point lead with a 66 yard drive in 7 plays. There were still over six minutes left before halftime, so the Bucs used pass completions from Morgan to Tyler Looper of 24 and 10 yards plus a 15 yard pass interference call against the Hornets to get back in scoring position.
