Tonkawa will make a long road trip this Friday in their District A-5 opener vs. Chouteau. The Wildcats are 0-3, but Buc Head Coach Mike Kirtley warns they’re much better than their record indicates.Chouteau lost their opener to Liberty 35-36, then fell to Salinta 28-34. They lost to Warner 14-33 last week in a game that was closely contested until the end.Kick off is at 7 p.m. at Chouteau. It is located off U.S. 69 just north of Interstate 412, about 2 1/2 hours away. The Wildcats have a “solid 4-2-5 defense that has good size and will be hard to run on,” Kirtley said. The Bucs will be facing another good, hard-running quartertback that will be in a flex-bone offense .“Defensively, we’ll have to play assignment football,” Kirtley said, “and do our jobs. Everybody is healthy going into this week’s game. “We need to continue to play with very few mistakes. And we’ll have to really block well in order to have a chance to run the ball,” Kirtley said.On the 66-14 win over Blackwell, Kirtley was pleased. “Our kids obviously played pretty good. We kept our focus and played well. And we didn’t give the ball away unnecessarily, which is always a plus.”
