50 years ago, May 4, 1972Sandy Salisbury Is Contestant For Rodeo QueenSandy Lee Salisbury, age 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Salisbury and a freshman at Tonkawa High school will be a queen contestant in the Black Gold Stampede to be held at the 101 Ranch Rodeo arena the evenings of May 4, 5, and 6. She will be riding her Pony of American gelding, Ki-O-Tee Bars. He was named Grand Champion of the Oklahoma P.O.A. Class “A” show in Oklahoma City on April 22.The Black Gold Stampede is expected to be one of the largest open rodeos in Oklahoma, according to Raymond and Dianne Tipton of Tonkawa, producers of the rodeo which is sponsored by Explorer Post 69, Ponca City.An “open rodeo, according to Tipton, is one open to anyone from any part of the country who has a “yearn” to rodeo.Cowboys and cowgirls from over a several state area have indicated they plan to participate. Events will be bareback bronc and bull riding, calf roping and street wrestling for the cowboys, and barrel racing for the girls.Doug Blubaugh Wrestling Coach, Gets High HonorsDoug Blubaugh, Michigan State University assistant wrestling coach, and a former Tonkawan, has been cited by the U. S. Wrestling Federation (USWF) for outstanding contributions to amateur wrestling in 1971.Blubaugh was named “USWF Coach of the Year” in recognition of his coaching the U.S. Pan American and World Games freestyle teams last year.The former Oklahoma State NCAA champion is the last American to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling. Blubaugh pinned six of several opponents in the 1960 Olympics and was named “Outstanding Wrestler in the World” for his performance.Conference Crown Won By THS Bucs At Wakita, 4-3Coach Kenneth Vogt’s Tonkawa High school Buccaneer baseball team finished the season with a 45-3 win over Wakita Wednesday afternoon which gave the Bucs the championship of the Cherokee Strip Conference. Dicky Fuhr was the winning pitcher for the Bucs.The Bucs scored a run in the fourth inning when Fuhr walked and was driven in by Mike Morgan’s single.
