50 years ago, April 27, 1972Two Teachers Resign; Three Hired At Special Board Meeting FridayTwo teacher resignations were accepted and three teachers were hired by the board of education at a special meeting at Tonkawa Grill. Mrs. Leona Rudd, school librarian and math teacher here for 16 years resigned to take early retirement. Mrs. Emma Walcher, junior high English teacher who has taught 11 years, two in the Tonkawa system, resigned and plans to quit teaching.Hired were Bruce Shropshire, Eufaula High school assistant football and basketball coach; his wife, Shirley, who is doing her practice teaching at an elementary school in Eufaula and Mrs. Bette Bertman, a Tonkawa High school graduate who has been teaching at Nardin school.Shropshire will teach English, coach basketball and be assistant football coach. He is finishing his third year of teaching and coaching at Eufaula. He graduated from Northeastern State college, Tahlequah, Murray State college, Tishomingo and is a 1965 graduate of Eufaula High school.Mrs. Bertman, the daughter of Mrs. Max Klein, 615 North Main, lives here with her mother and has been teaching at Nardin for the past three years. She has had six years teaching experience in Indiana and Illinois. She is a 1954 Tonkawa High graduate and received her bachelor of science in education degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1958. She has been hired to teach either at the elementary level or possibly in special education if a class is started here next fall. She plans to attend summer school to qualify for the special education job.Peace Rose Unit Has Meeting In Rosecrans HomeThirteen members and three guests were present when the Peace Rose Unit of the Tonkawa Garden Club met in the home of Miss Leota Rosecrans on April 21 with Mrs. Harve Stewart as co-hostess.The meeting opened in regular form with the president. Mrs. George Barnhill, presiding. She welcomed to the meeting a member, Mrs. George Needham, who has been hospitalized, and also guests, Mrs. Ed Frazier, Mrs. C. L. Konklin, and Miss Mabel Borland.The devotional “Wild Roses” from Meditations on Garden Themes was given by Mrs. Fred Boland.Highlights from The Oklahoma Gardener were presented by Miss Lida Mae Cobb. Routine reports were given. An invitation to a tea at the Governor’s Mansion on Tuesday, April 25, was read. Announcement was made of Clean-Up Week.
