Katelyn Qualls received the Delphi Study Club Scholarship at the club’s spring luncheon April 12. Education Committee Chair Linda Brown introduced Katelyn and her mother, Melissa Qualls, and presented a scholarship certificate to the recipient.Katelyn is a 2022 graduate of Tonkawa High School where she is a member of the National Honor Society. During her high school career she has participated in Extended Studies, Vocal, Yearbook and Quiz Bowl. She will attend Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa, working toward a degree in nursing.“I have been wanting to be a nurse for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I would like to be a pediatric nurse and to work with babies and children.”She is the daughter of Melissa and Jonathan Qualls of Tonkawa.Social Committee members Beverly Frazier, Ann Cales and Carolyn Ott served the buffet luncheon to members and guests, Katelyn and Melissa Qualls, in the Baptist Fellowship Hall. The luncheon table was covered with a pink cloth and featured a centerpiece of spring flowers. Table favors were Easter bunnies crafted from large Styrofoam cups filled with Easter candies.President Evelyn Coyle installed officers for 2022-2024: Carolyn Ott, president; Ann Cales, vice president; and Marjilea Smithheisler, secretary-treasurer. Carolyn Ott reviewed Beyond the Hayfields: A Memoir of Blessings and Forgiveness by Vincent De Young, a retired attorney and a U.S. Air Force veteran. The son of Dutch immigrants, De Young takes his title from the hayfields behind his boyhood home. Not wanting to enter his father’s business, he entered Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, after graduating from college. He served as a navigator and, after his honorable discharge, went to law school. He worked as an attorney for Kentucky Fried Chicken and for Holiday Inn and at one time had his own law firm. He and his wife, Carol, have six children, two of whom are adopted. He wrote his book following a long and painful recovery from life-threatening surgery, recognizing the blessings and forgiveness in his life.
