50 years ago, April 13, 1972Dr. M. L. BergstenDr. M. L. Bergsten admires plaque presented to him Friday night at the Billings FFA annual dinner. The award, the only one of its kind ever given was in “Appreciation for Outstanding Service to the Billings Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.” Bergsten, who retired from the practice of veterinary medicine the first of the year has been attending the annual banquets at Billings since 1938.Travis Garten Wins Two Firsts In Pole VaultingTravis Garten, Tonkawa High school senior pole vaulter has won two first places in vaulting in his first two appearances this season in track meets in which Buc tracksters have participated. At the Northwestern State College Relays on March 31. Garten won the event with a vault of 13 feet four inches.On Thursday he won first at Jetmore, Kansas at the Meet of Champions, an invitational affair, with a vault of 13 feet eight inches. He established a new meet record and barely missed 14 feet.Upcoming meets for the track team, coached by Fred Garten include the Wichita State University Relays on April 13 and the Enid Invitational on April 14.Members of the team are, Garten, the team’s only senior; three juniors, Pat Chandler, low hurdles, 220-yard dash, mile relay; Doug Sloan, broad jump, mile relay; Willie Cantrell, shot put; and three sophomores, Louie Vineyard, half mile and mile relay; Cody Wilson, mile relay, broad jump and high jump and Pete Scott, 220-yard dash and mile relay.Xi Alpha Pi Meeting Held In Metcalf HomeXi Alpha Pi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met in the home of Mrs. Neil Metcalf on Monday, April 3, with thirteen members present.Mrs. Oscar Merrell, president, called the meeting to order with members repeating the opening ritual.
