50 years ago, March 16, 1972Cooperators and their families of the Western Kay County Conservation District were guests of the Tonkawa Chamber of Commerce at a barbecue food Thursday night in the High school cafeteria and then adjourned to the school auditorium for a program that honored the 11 area farmers for their conservation work. County commissioner Tom Hall was the principal speaker.The Northern Oklahoma college Roustabouts, musical group under direction of Bill Heilmann and Mrs. Pam Davis presented a number of selections to begin the program and concluded with a patriotic medley consisting of God Bless America and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Jack Savage, vice chairman of the district board was master of ceremonies and following the Invocation by Dick Bogard, Pawhuska, Bill Huston, chamber president welcomed the group to Tonkawa.Recipient of the Goodyear Award as the outstanding cooperator in the district for 1971 was Foster H. Tripp, Nardin. He was presented a plaque by Paul Davis, representing the Goodyear company.Joe H. Cannon, president of the First National Bank, Blackwell, assisted by Nick Larchey, Braman First National and Jack Bell, Security Bank, Blackwell, presented ten Banker’s awards to district cooperators. Basic conservation plans were prepared for each of the farms. With the technical help of the Soil Conservation Service, the farmer decided which conservation practice he would apply and where they would go on his land, based on a plant and soils inventory. The decisions of the farmers were recorded on a conservation plan map and the farmer was provided a copy. The recipients have, completed at least 90 percent and in most cases, all of the conservation work they planned on their farms.Those receiving awards were: F. B. Olson, A. C. Koelling and H. W. Skipper, all of Tonkawa; George Buesing, Kildare; Edwin Claybaker and Charles Cowell, Blackwell; Jess Haynes, Nardin; James Sharrock, Ponca City; Wayne Shoffner and Fred Warnholz, Braman.Legion Auxiliary Names Girls StatersThe American Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. Maree Yount, president, has announced that Paula Humphries and Joyce Jared have been selected as delegates, and Rhonda Lucas and Cindy Allen, alternates, to Oklahoma Girls State, which will be held May 27-June 3, 1972, at east Central State College at Ada, Oklahoma.The Marland delegate is Miss Cathy Boyer and the alternate is Miss Barbara Tautfest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tautfest.
