Assistant Fire Chief Tim Gilbert of the Tonkawa Fire Department wrote the following incident report. It follows:Recently, we responded to a report of 2 horses in the vicinity of 10th and Grand Avenue running loose. Upon leaving the station, we headed north on Main St. and immediately found them. They were right in front of us going north. They then darted east to the library. Not wanting to disrupt their education but knowing they do not have opposable thumbs, We decided that was not the proper place for 2 horses. One was a little, black, stud pony and the other was a full sized mare. An attempt to calm them for capture was made. They, on the other hand, had different ideas. Also assisting with the capture of these 2 renegade bandits were 3 guys on motorcycles and a good samaritan with a truck load of feed. We zig zagged the neighborhood ending up just west of the ball fields at Blinn Park. Parts of the chase were made by vehicle and some parts were on foot. At this point, we have these horses west of the ball fields out of the way of causing harm or being harmed but without a good place to attempt capture. The horses are not satisfied by their current position in the world, so they decide to travel south. Somehow in all this excitement, they become penned in a large yard with 2 fences and some more self appointed horse whisperers that have decided to show up for the rodeo. Now the owners of these horses show up and to my amazement decide that they can out run and out maneuver these ...
