60 years ago, June 1, 19612 Silver Dollars Taken in Second Station BurglaryBurglars entered the Kelle-Hall Oil Co. station a mile north of Tonkawa for the second time Tuesday night or early Wednesday but apparently netted only two silver dollars and a pay telephone for their night’s work.Overlooked in the drawer of the cash register, left open by Manager Tom Hall when closed, were three rolls of dimes and handful of pennies.It was mid-morning before it was discovered that a pay telephone had been ripped from the wall. The phone contained an undetermined amount of money.The break-in was discovered about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday by City Patrolman Gary Perks who noticed a hasp on the front door slightly out of place. Investigation revealed a padlock had been twisted off the front door to gain entry.Although there were other signs of activity within the station, only the silver dollars from the register were taken.In a burglary in May, a safe was totally destroyed by burglars who took approximately $120 in cash.Sheriff Forrest Walker was continuing his investigation of the robbery today.Local Athlete Tells KiwaniansAbout Basketball Tour in the Soviet UnionA trip to Russia as a member of the Women’s International Basketball team was described for Tonkawa Kiwanians Wednesday by Betty Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Scott, Route 2.Miss Scott was one of 12 girls chosen from 32 women’s basketball teams participating in the national tournament in St. Joseph this spring to make the Russian exhibition tour. Touring at the same time was the American Men’s International team.The sophomore at Wayland Baptist college in Plainview said the Americans were well received by Russians and they were asked no questions concerning integration or political matters, although warned to expect it.Betty said the men’s team won its eight scheduled games while the women’s team ended with a 4-4 record. Three of the losses were in the first games while the American team was getting used to playing together and becoming acquainted with Russian rules and equipment.Good Sports“Officiating was very fair and crowds were generous with their applause at good plays made by both teams,” she said. “They were very good sports.”The Russian girls were big, rough and aggressive and played an offensive type of game.” She continued.The touring Americans were in Russia for that country’s leading holiday and did get to see part of the May Day celebration in Kiev.
