60 years ago, May 11, 1961Lions Club Elects Boone President For Coming YearTonkawa Lions clubbers last week elected J. W. Boone to the presidency of the club for the coming year. Installation will be held next fall.Elected first vice president was G. Bryant Morton; John Bloss and Robert Steichen were elected second and third vice presidents.Niki Mugg was chosen tail twister with Kenneth Russell named Lion tamer. Directors elected were Hal Hunt and Ray Simpson.The boys quartet of Northern Junior college presented the program at today’s meeting. Members are Dennis Williams, Garry O’Mealey, Wendell Cornell and Jerry Shuford. Norval Bryson was accompanist.Selections presented today were: “Get Me to the Church on Time,” “My Soul’s Gonna Rise Again,” and “Street Urchin’s Song.”Visitors were Gene Deal. Tonkawa, Charles Caldwell, Oklahoma City and a Mr. Barnhill. John Sewell was introduced as a new member and Clyde Pickard was recognized as a transfer member to the Tonkawa club.Class Delegates Are Elected for Student CouncilRepresentatives to the Tonkawa High student council for the 1961-62 school year were chosen in an election held Tuesday afternoon. The action followed an amendment adapted recently moving the election dates up to the proceeding spring from the fall term.Elected representatives of the senior class were Sharon Hubbell and Gary Prelesnick. Junior representatives will be Tina Simmons and Stephen Maassen. Gwen Burns and Johnny Fix are official delegates of the sophomore class, and Lydia Taylor and Eddie McKinnis are freshmen representatives. Martha Musselman and Craig Humphries will represent the eighth grade. Seventh grade representatives will be chosen at the beginning of the fall term.Officers of the council for the coming year are Mike Williams, president, Jill Harris, vice president, and Lauralea Taylor, secretary. Joe Hubbell, principal, is sponsor of the student council.Strange Elected Postmaster VeepGlen L. Strange, Tonkawa postmaster, was elected state vice president of the Oklahoma chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States Saturday in Oklahoma City.Strange will serve as state vice president representing second class post offices and will take office after the national convention of the organization in Denver in October. His term will be for one year.Strange was elected at the business meeting of the convention held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Huckins hotel in Oklahoma City.
