Tonkawan Suffers Injuries Today in One-Car AccidentA young Tonkawa man was hospitalized at Blackwell General hospital this morning with undetermined injuries suffered in a onecar accident at approximately 12:45 a.m. about one and one-half miles southwest of town.Fred Sipe, 22, 206 ½ N. Barnes, arrived at the hospital about 3 a.m., according to Highway Trooper Ray Grenninger who said he must have lain at the accident scene approximately two hours.The trooper said Sipe’s car, a 1957 Ford, turned over on a county road and rolled 189 feet into a wheat field, overturning about two times. He believed the driver must have been thrown from the car on the first roll and lay there for two hours before he was able to walk to a neighboring house to call an ambulance.Sipe’s injuries were described as serious and included fractured ribs and undetermined spinal injury. His car was listed as a total loss.Miss Smith Wins BPW ScholarshipMiss Barbara Smith, Tonkawa high school senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, was named the 1961 recipient of the Tonkawa Business and Professional Women’s club scholarship award, at the Thursday evening dinner meeting of the group held in the Tonkawa Grill.The scholarship has been given annually for the past five years to an outstanding Tonkawa high school business department student who plans to major in the field of business. Receiving the award in previous years were Wilma McPherson, Joan Campbell, Sharon Sloan and Janice Cunningham.The announcement was made by Mrs. Frank Michael, chairman of the club’s Career Advancement meeting.Miss Smith will be awarded a $50 scholarship to NOJC and honored at a later meeting of the BPW this spring.Ralph Herren of the NOJC Social Science department and in charge of the college Counseling and Testing program was guest speaker for the occasion.Club Completes Plans for Conducting Cancer Fund Drive at Thursday MeetingThe Tonkawa Junior Research club made plans for conducting the Cancer fund drive here at its Thursday afternoon meeting in the home of Mrs. Dennis Impson, with Mrs. Warren I. Wood as hostess.Mrs. Bob Colombe presided during the afternoon and introduced Mrs. R. S. Asbury who reviewed “Perle”, the autobiography of Perle Mesta written in collaboration with Robert Cahn.Mrs. Impson, Mrs. Robert Cargill and Mrs. Clark McKee were named to an auditing committee, and plans were made to conclude the club year with a one o’clock luncheon May 11 in the club ...
