This weeks edition of Museum Memories takes us back to eight miles South of Tonkawa in the early 1920’s. Ernest W. Marland drilled and struck oil on the 29th of June in 1921. Mr. Marland had drilled 9 holes and came up dry when he finally struck gold on the 10th try.
This discovery soon turned into an area that stretched across eight square miles. This area known as “Three Sands” was born. It got the reputation for being “the billion dollar spot” by bringing more wealth to its 28 operators than had any other field in Oklahoma history.
One hundred and twenty seven million barrels of oil was produced during this profitable time in history. Visit the “Three Sands” room at the McCarter Museum. It was such an interesting time in our history!
