School Election Is Tuesday; Two Levies on Ballot
Qualified voters of Tonkawa school district will go to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots on two tax levies. All voting will be done at the city hall between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Rual Case, incumbent, is the only person for Office No. 1 on the board to be elected automatically for the first full five-year term in the office. He was appointed some two years ago to fill the unexpired term of the late H. A. Wyckoff.
Tax levies requiring passage by school district residents are a five-mill building fund levy and a five-mill emergency food levy. The building fund has been passed annually for many years. This is only the second year the emergency levy has been requested.
According to Bob Boone, school board president, the only way in which the Tonkawa school can meet its estimate of needs for the coming year is the passage of the emergency tax.
School needs for the coming school year have been estimated at $243,000, including $233,000 for current expense and $10,000 for capital outlay. The net assessed evaluation of the district is $2,916,586 which would require an ad valorem levy of 28 mills to meet needs above receipts from other sources.
According to law, the board can levy 20 mills without election, but can submit an additional five-mill levy to voters for their approval. Each five-mill levy will provide approximately $15,000.
